Magellan on Earth 2

“Hey, what if we take that Phaser ship instead of running from it?” Joe asked as the crew brainstormed their current situation in the common area.

It had been the overall consensus that they were not going to cut and run as any reasonable exploration crew might do in the face of such danger, but a full-scale battle against this alien foe wasn’t a desirable alternative.

“It’s a small ship, do we even know for sure it can phase? Besides, the entire crew appears to be wandering around the meadow aimlessly and without concern,” Abby commented

“Do we have any idea how big the crew is for this class vessel?” Hannah asked absently as she silently counted the number of aliens wandering about the small clearing in her display.

To her eyes, the aliens looked more like a scientific team than a combat squad. They would stop and study things in the clearing, taking samples and talking among themselves for great periods.

“It is quite evident that they are not expecting any trouble, their defenses are down and the crew seems to be taking some kind of shore leave. Half of them is not even armed,” the captain observed as he pointed to the large display on the console Hannah had been studying.

Before retreating to the Magellan, Joe, and Abby had recovered from their hovercycles and discretely placed a few monitors in the tree line where they had been hiding. From that location, they could both observe the aliens and scan the ship with an array of low-energy sensors. The trick was to only use the passive scanners they believed the Phasers couldn’t detect or the aliens might get a clue of their presence on the planet.

“Much of the Phaser military structure is unknown to us, but the ship here is identical to those we have previously encountered as exploratory science vessels. Speculation is the crew consists of no more than ten to twelve members, mostly scientists. We have observed that with so many on the ground, if there were a few more members inside, it would make for extremely uncomfortable conditions aboard the craft,” Annie relayed.

The crew was quiet as everyone considered the options on the table.

“Last time we captured any of these guys they almost died,” Alice commented absently as she considered their options.

“I’m less concerned about taking anyone alive at great risk to my crew. I have seen the aftermath of their efforts on Reaper’s World and feel no obligations,” the captain commented, apparently not enthusiastic about the dangers involved.

“Taking the ship would be a great intelligence coup. The captured craft on Reaper’s World was not capable of phasing, so this ship could be the key to unlocking the technology and would save countless lives,” Annie offered in rebuttal.

“The thought had crossed my mind,” Erisey replied.

“Our combat gear should mask us against their sensors, if we move on foot, we could catch them in a crossfire before they knew what hit them,” Hannah suggested.

“I’m not sure that is entirely true.
